thread Good evening!
My mate would like some free CAD software in order to model the interior of a transit van.

Any suggestions?

edit: also, where would I get a plan of mk1 transit? (so I know where the wheel arches are and stuff)

editedit: for vitsa. Free or "free".

editeditedit: Or the dimensions of a mk1 transit? I'm really shit with a tape measure
permalink while there is open source CAD
learning it would take longer than whittling a 1:1 scale transit interior out of a solid block of tungsten with a bogbrush

use sketchup instead
permalink thanks.
I'll order some tungsten.
permalink Nope... listen to the meep.
Sketchup is your free and reasonably easy-to-get-into friend.

Does anyone have any easy-to-get-into friends? Feel free to post their phone numbers.
permalink Oooh while you're here...
http://www.guardian.co...

any answers?
permalink Apparently some British lighting engineer caused the problem
They've put out a fatwa on him.
permalink lucky bloke
last time I had a fatwa...etc
permalink Haha, I was just about to post
this: http://www.huffingtonp... and tell him one of his lightbulbs has blown...
permalink I've just been reading that!
Not remotely surprised.

Electrical Issues? No Shit. when I was there in November the installation was terrifyingly shonky. What you have to realise is that that building is a 5 star hotel with a third world country stuck on top.

If you find the full AP story that that's subbed from, there's a great quote from a visitor:

"The tower was projected as a metaphor for Dubai. So the metaphor should work.”

Strikes me the metaphor is working just fine there...
permalink If you only want internal dims
MK1 & MK2 are the same I'm sure
permalink Best bet is to get a tape measure out and survey the bugger anyway.
Cowjam - what does your mate want to do with it? Is he making a shagginwagon?
permalink a MK1 nust be rarer than a Bristol virgin
by now
permalink She.
Yes, she is. The inside rear is stripped down to external walls, it's going to be rebuilt and she'll be ordering a custom made 'rock & roll' bed for the back.
permalink If you are of a naughty persuasion,
you can torrent AutoCAD, Microstation and Vectorworks quite easily (I got all three in an evening), though there'll be a bit of a learning curve on them. But yes, Sketchup is very easy to use, though you'll have to pay for a license to get a version that will export any other CAD file format than a Sketchup model - no dwgs, dgns, vwxs or dxfs.
permalink or you could email a sketchup file so someone you might now who might have a license
and they could export for you...

Might just be one or two of us here...

Doesn't sound like he'd need to export anyway...
permalink You're right, she won't be exporting it
ta to everyone. She's giving sketchup a go.
permalink this
if sh's a novice vectorworks is closest to photoshop

permalink ta
`
permalink prodesktop was some I used at school
(2002 I think) it was OK for modelling

why not just by a mark 1 transit for 30 quid?
permalink Can't even get a door skin for that
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/...
permalink She's got a transit
(cost a tad more than £30)

She wants to model the insides before we get it built. Fortunately a good friend is a coachbuilder.
permalink it sounds like a fun project
what's it going to be?
permalink Shag wagon.
It's was a camper when we bought it - high roof, rear door, tiny excuse of a kitchen. It's been stripped out, it's going to be proper pimped. The coachbuilder and his mate are doing the insides, I'm doing the electronics (might get a real person in to do the mains loop) which'll include a built-in computer, stereo, etc and we'll be putting a couple of beds in. Then we'll hit the road at a max of about 55mph.
permalink are you trying to shag this women in her van?
I'm sure dinner and nice walk would work as well. They you don't have to arse about with van
permalink No I'm not.
I might want to borrow her shag wagon for a weekend on occasion though.
permalink If you are looking into running all that kit then I suggest
fitting an alternator off as late a model diesel that you can fit plus two batteries and a split charge circuit, then you'll be able to run an inverter for modest mains powered stuff

permalink I was only planning on running stuff
(other than internal lights) with the engine on, or when we're hooked up to mains.

Do I still need a beefier alternator?
sam at cowjam.net if you want to give me some idiot proof advice :)
permalink an alternator will only charge when the engine
is revving, I'll sort out some details for you in the morning when I'm a little less monged ;o)
permalink cheers
:)
permalink google sketch up
he'll probably be able to download one off the warehouse thing
permalink I had a look
I couldn't find a mk1 or 2.

She's made a start on sketchup tho.
